The Short and Sweet Dress

I posted recently about my goal to make three summer dresses before the end of summer.  I managed to get two and a half done before the end of February, and this was the first. If you don't recognise it, it's an Adelaide dress by Seamwork.  The fabric is something I found in an op-shop and I'm going to guess it's a cotton rayon blend.  I have been planning on making this dress for a long time, years in fact, and I'm glad I was finally able to tick it off my list!!

The details:
Pattern: Adelaide dress by Seamwork
Fabric: Some sort of cotton blend from an op-shop
Size: 4 at the bust, graded to 6 at the waist and 10 at the hips
Special touches and alterations: Lengthened bodice by 1cm at armpit level and 2cm at waist, and shortened skirt by 11cm
I cut a size 4 at the bust, blending to a 6 at the waist and a 10 at the hips. It might be slightly tight across the bust but I don't mind the fit.  I lengthened the bodice by 1cm at the armpit, to lower the bust darts and give myself more room in the armhole without lowering the neckline.  The bust darts sit well but the armhole is still a bit tight. I also added 2cm to the bodice length at the waist.
The most fun part of the project was definitely setting the snaps! I had never done it before and the instructions were pretty terrible on the kit I bought.  I did a practice, then still managed to accidentally set my first snap back to front!!! Luckily I was able to pry it off with some pliers, and redo. I finished the seams with my overlocker, and used a berry coloured bias binding from my stash for the neckline and armholes, which I failed to take a picture of, whoops!
I somehow had a measuring fail and cut my hem too short, I'm still not sure how that happened! I overlocked the hem and folded it over the smallest amount I could get away with, and I think it's very short but wearable. Of course, what do I wear it to on it's first outing? An Egyptian themed escape room that had me crawling around in sand on my hands and knees.... I'm sure the staff watching our progress on the cameras got an eyeful of my underwear.  :O
I managed to get a few wears of it before March (I'm on holiday in Europe for the whole of March and it is not weather appropriate for Finland in March :P) and I'm already looking forward to pulling it out next summer!

  1. Such a perfect combo of fabric and pattern! I wish I could find the perfect cotton/rayon blend light woven fabric like that. I would buy 100 yards of it in ALL the colors and make every top I've ever wanted.

Hope you have a lovely holiday =)
